If you haven't  seen the movie, you should! It's a fun movie, full of laughs for everyone in the family, but also has some really good talking points. Rather than a fillable document this time, I'm just posting the notes that I made. Instead of a formal lesson, we had an all-youth movie night complete with all the popcorn and snacks, and a time of singing Christmas Carols together. What FUN!!!

Discussion prompts:

  • What character could you most relate to?
  • What did you think of the attitude of the people at church towards the Herdman kids?
  • Have you ever known anyone who knew absolutely nothing about the Christmas story as told in scripture?
  • Why do you think Imogene was so fascinated with Mary?
  • When her siblings asked her why they were having to study up on their characters, Imogene responded that it was about being able to pret3end for a little while that you had a completely different life, and become someone new. How does that relaate to what Jesus does in our lives?
  • When Beth went to her mom during rehearsal and said that they couldn't allow the Herdman's to ruin the pageant for the church (or embarrass her mom) how did that make you feel?
  • Everyone was so quick to blame the Herdman's for the fire. Have you ever had people blame you for something you didn't do? Or have you automatically (and incorrectly) assumed the worst about someone and blamed them for something they didn't do?
  • What about Beth's prayers? Did you notice how they changed after the dress rehearsal fiasco?
  • When they learned the truth about the fire, Beth took note of how not one person apologized for their accusations. How quick are we to apologize when we have passed judgment wrongly on someone else?
  • What about Beth's prayers? Did you notice how they changed after the dress rehearsal fiasco?
  • According to Beth's mom, what was the whole point of the story?
  • Beth told Imogene "Mary did the hard thing even when it was scary". Spend a few minutes talking about how Mary must have felt.
  • What was the significance of the ham?
  • What was the biggest miracle of the Christmas pageant?
